Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day

Young children are blessed to live in the present. Sometimes it is difficult for them to understand concepts or times that are beyond their personal experiences. Remembrance Day can be one of those topics that is difficult for young learners to grasp.

I usually start my approach to this important day through the concept of peace by using resources such as books about peace, and then move to discussions around the poppy and other related images (see vocabulary card link below).

Who’s That Man ?

Several years ago, I also came a cross this beautiful book titled “Who’s That Man?” written by Saskatchewan author, Marny Duncan-Cary. The story of a homecoming. A young boy meets his father for the first time because they were separated by war. I find the children connect to the young boy and are able to understand the feelings both he and the dad are experiencing.

There is also a song video that I also use.

Poppy Exploration

Once we have discussed the significance of the poppy, I set out invitations for the children to explore. Here are some wonderful invitations from a educator colleague, Monique Wahl.
