Inspiration for our Pumpkins

A recent Instagram post inspired me to try this activity with my kindergarten class.  I have always used a directed drawing of a pumpkin around this time of year and when I saw a similar lesson posted by DAP Chronicles, I set out to tweak my lesson plans.

The lesson now incorporated the pumpkin guided drawing along with a quick study of the artist Yayoi Kusama.  We first practiced the pumpkins on our white boards and the next day we drew the pumpkins with permanent markers on cardstock.  We used a guided drawing that was posted on www.deepspacesparkle.com

We discussed the various patterns that we noticed that the artist included on her pumpkins. The children then added dots and patterns to their pumpkins.

The next day we added watercolour paints.

I offered three colour choices, and the result was beautiful.  Each child’s pumpkin was unique.  Some choose a solid colour for their pumpkin and the background, others incorporated patterns and mixed colour designs.

I am thankful for teachers that share the learning experiences they use in the classroom and am excited to see what treasures I find in the future.

Happy Teaching and Learning,
