Halloween Books

I have many go-to books that I use in October, including a collection of Halloween Books. I am always on the search for new books to add to my collection. This week I found several new halloween books at my local library that I will use with my students in the next two weeks.

When I’m selecting new books for my classroom, I look for engaging illustrations and a simple to follow storyline. I use the books to model fluency as well for the students to practice thinking strategies such as making predictions and asking wonder questions. I also revisit the books to talk about setting, characters and plot.

New Halloween Books (for me)

Trick or Treat Crankenstein – love that this book talks about dealing with the disappointment of a day / event that does not go as planned

Gustavo The Shy Ghost – I think many of my students can related to Gustavo. He is shy and has a hard time meeting new friends but he takes a risk, and of course it pays off!

In the Den – I picked this decodable story for one of my “already can read students” to practice and read to the class.

Sir Simon Super Scarer – Sir Simon gets his first professional haunting job. Some things go as planned and others not so much.

Stumpkin – a pumpkin without a stem dreams of becoming a jack-o-lantern, will anyone see his potential. A great reminder to look beyond the surface.

The Ghosts go Scaring – if your students like the Ants go Marching they will surely enjoy this version.

Turkey (a character with many stories)

We read Turkey Trouble just before Thanksgiving and the children loved this delightful story. Turkey is very creative and his problem-solving antics don’t always turn out the way he hopes. I’m curious to see the connections the children will make with the next two books that we will read with this funny turkey.

Inferencing Practice Book – Dude

Dude is not a Halloween Book but is a great book for students to work on making inferences. The word Dude is the only word in the book and students use their background knowledge and the illustrations to infer the meaning of the word Dude on each page.
