Dramatic Play in Kindergarten

We all remember role playing as children.  We sometimes took on the role of a superhero, a princess or the all-mighty grown-up.  This week, with the help of the children, we added two new dramatic areas to our classroom.

Benefits of Dramatic Play

Dramatic play provides children with the opportunity to be whoever or whatever they want.  They can revisit familiar experiences or explore new ideas and concepts.

Our Veterinarian Clinic and Subway Restaurant invited children to take on a role, thinking and acting not as themselves but outside of themselves as someone would act.  Dramatic play is a huge tool for learning and development.  Social skills, abstract thinking and problem solving are some of the skills developed during this important type of play.

Literacy and numeracy skill practice are embedded in the play.  Children try out new vocabulary, communicate their ideas and articulate their thinking. They also practice communicating by completing their veterinarian checklist and through payment at the restaurant.
